GEARS SpeedofThought
High School Students Learning STEM in BHS' Field School With Mentors

About GEARS SpeedofThought

The Benjamin Harrison Society GEARS program embraces education and research on all aspects of biodiversity, including the history of life on earth, the evolutionary mechanisms that generate diversity, the ecological context in which all life has evolved, and the consequences of interactions among organisms, including humans. Our professional mentor’s expertise ranges from bacteria to mastodons, from the tropics to the tundra, from the theoretical to the practical.

Research in GEARS spans the full range of biological diversity from viruses to mammals and includes understanding the diversity of organisms, discerning their history (comparative biology and systematics, paleobiology), accounting for their characteristics (evolutionary processes), analyzing the function of their features (functional organismal biology), and understanding how organisms affect and are affected by environmental factors, including other organisms (ecology).  “We have an interdisciplinary team that is well-positioned to address these issues, and we are excited about the prospect of making a significant contribution toward shaping the future of STEM programs in schools.”

GEARS is a unique interdisciplinary STEM program.  It offers students with interests in information, decision, and control sciences, and in all application areas encompassing the modeling, analysis, simulation, control, optimization, and management of complex systems.

GEARS also offers  a unique  cross-disciplinary STEM curriculum, together with the Language Arts,  Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Technology. Study and research activities focus on automation, control and robotics, communication and networking,

computational and systems biology, information sciences, and production, ocean graphic  studies, waterways sciences, environmental science, urban studies, service systems, supply chain management and language arts---and much more.

For example:  Systems Engineering cuts across the traditional engineering studies---that enables building, analyzing, or managing a system be it electrical, mechanical, chemical, biological or one involving business processes and logistics. Students are equipped with the unique skills to adapt their knowledge and expertise to different application domains with this flexibility placing them in high demand while attending college and college graduation.

What is the Teachers Responsibility?

Teachers who are GEARS customers simply log into their GEARS SpeedofThought account and select the GEARS Curriculum icon. They then walk through the simple steps to create a description of their activity, including selecting a grade range, a scoring scheme, objectives, estimated completion time, and any resources needed. They can add any Web resource links and supporting files, like images, quizzes and answer keys. Teachers can then immediately assign the new lesson to students. And they can use the GEARS SpeedofThought tools to track and grade student progress on any of their own activities.
