This summer experience will acquaint students with the War of 1812 archaeological excavations in Washington, D.C., Geographic Information Systems (GIS) their community and architecture styles, that once graced our city. Benjamin Harrison Society Summer I DIG HISTORY Institute will be hosted at the U.S. Graduate School. BHS has joined together with the USDA in a collaborative effort to educate disadvantage and urban youth in geography, engineering, archaeology, reading and science (GEARS) through the use of GIS and technology. Students will conduct archaeological excavations via the webcam and the field. Student will also survey and document existing War of 1812 structures through photography, maps, description, assessment of the buildings' condition, and architectural elements significant to the structure. Students will continue to develop an ongoing Zoning and Economic Development Database using Sketch-up and Google.
Once completed with the research phase, students will create GIS War of 1812 historical maps, a War of 1812 Historical Landmark reference guide which will be available for other students, teachers, parents, historians and scientist to use around the world.
