DOTS INTERACTIVE GIS MAPS CHALLENGES IN THE CLASSROOM
Digistal Objects Tell Stories (DOTS) connects historical maps with modern maps. The Benjamin Harrison Society's DOTS Project takes students , teachers, families, researchers, historians, scientist to battles grounds from the American Revolution, War of 1812,Civil War to the War in Iraq. This interactive DOTS Project gives teachers, parents, tourists, planners, and residents a glance of the cities, lots and squares, battlegrounds, Forts, and infrastructure through DOTS. The DOTS interactive map also enhances the Benjmin Harrison Society's Geograpic, Engineering, Archaeology, Reading and Science (GEARS) Project. DOTS maps are produced in the ArcGIS environment and an attempt has been made to carefully balance the large amount of information and hierarchical range of visual detail. Custom point symbols were employed to distinguish the many landmarks scattered throughout the historical map. In addition, map readers can use the map index to quickly locate points of interest. A general index allows for quick reference to points of interest such as historical landmarks, historical district, buildings, historical routes, sites, monuments, battlefields, archaeological sites, museums, libraries, government offices, and parks. The atlas also includes an index of old street names and their corresponding new names, and vice versa, excavated artifacts and important information regarding the excavated artifact, and vice versa. Extensive care was taken during the map-design phase. With the vast amount of information, careful placement of annotation and preparation of cartographic symbols help achieve maximum readability.
